When Disasters Happen Staying Informed Can Save Lives
Being prepared with the right emergency supplies can make all the difference. Kūpuna in Hawaiʻi, especially those living alone, should have an emergency kit that supports their unique needs for at least two weeks.
A good emergency kit includes:
- Non-perishable food and clean drinking water
- Medications and medical supplies (with a list of drugs and dosing)
- Flashlights, extra batteries, and a manual can opener
- Hygiene items and sanitation supplies
- Important documents and emergency contacts
- Cash in small bills
- An updated communication plan with emergency contacts
- Assistive devices like glasses, hearing aids, and mobility aids
Consider the needs of caregivers too. If you care for a family member, you'll need extra supplies to support them comfortably and safely.
It's also important to have:
- Emergency kits for pets
- Frequently visited places with days, times, and address (i.e. church)
- Supplies that meet cultural and dietary preferences
Update kit twice a year and share plan with family, friends, and neighbors.
