When Disasters Happen Staying Informed Can Save Lives
A safe home environment is essential. Walk through your home to identify hazards and eliminate barriers that will make it difficult to evacuate quickly.
Tips to Keep You Safe in Your Home
- Install and regularly check smoke alarms
- Discuss a fire escape plan and practice with every family member
- Keep hallways and exits free of clutter
- Ensure rugs are secured to prevent tripping
- Use non-slip mats in bathrooms and kitchens
- Keep a working fire extinguisher nearby
Kitchen safety is also key. Never leave cooking unattended, especially with open flames or oil. Keep pot handles turned inward, and store flammable items away from the stove.
If you use medical oxygen, avoid smoking indoors and follow safety guidance from your provider. Fire sprinklers, safety rails, and adequate lighting are all small upgrades that can prevent big accidents.
